Despite a 1-0 home second-leg loss, Legia Warszawa prevailed 2-1 on aggregate against Śląsk Wrocław to lift the Polish Cup for a record third time in a row.
Śląsk faced an uphill task after a 2-0 defeat in Wroclaw, yet were brimming with belief when Michał Żewłakow put through his own net just two minutes in. Stanislav Levy's team proceeded to dicate possession, with Waldemar Sobota and Piotr Ćwielong squandering decent first-half opportunities.
If Śląsk's frustration was simmering, it boiled over when Piotr Ćwielong's lofted effort sailed over the goalkeeper and bounced back off the crossbar. Legia had to dig deep to stave off Śląsk in the dying minutes and the relief was tangible when the final whistle blew to confirm their 16th Polish Cup.
"I'm not particularly pleased with the way we played. We made matters complicated by losing an early goal," said Legia coach Jan Urban. "However, over the two matches I think we were the better side. We deserved to win the cup."
"We are delighted but we won't celebrate tonight because we are still fighting for the title and have some difficult league matches ahead," added defender Żewłakow, whose side are two points clear at the Polish First Division summit.
