Cheyrou special lifts Marseille second

Olympique de Marseille responded to Olympique Lyonnais' Friday night win with a victory of their own on Saturday against Stade Brestois 29, enabling them to retake second place in Ligue 1.

Olympique de Marseille reassumed second place in Ligue 1 by edging past Stade Brestois 29 1-0 at the Stade Vélodrome.

Olympique Lyonnais had taken OM's spot behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain FC after Clément Grenier's late winner earned them a 2-1 win against current title holders Montpellier Hérault SC on Friday night.

Lyon's stay proved a transient one, however, thanks to Benoît Cheyrou's excellent effort on the stroke of half-time. OM have been less than prolific this term, and indeed this was their 11th 1-0 win of the campaign, but there was a touch of class to the midfielder's left-footed free-kick, which cracked in off the base of the right post, leaving Alexis Thébaux helpless.

Élie Baup's side are six points behind PSG, who host fifth-placed OGC Nice on Sunday night, while Brest remain 19th and three points shy of safety, having played a game more than anyone else in the bottom half of the table.
