Promoting public health, environmental sustainability and active lifestyles via football clubs and their stadiums will be among the key topics for discussion at the UEFA-supported European Healthy Stadia Conference, taking place at the City of Manchester Stadium on 21 March.
The conference – organised by the European Healthy Stadia Network – aims to champion public health through football clubs and their stadiums, while also consolidating the corporate objectives of clubs. Featuring a programme of over 35 keynote and plenary speakers, the European Healthy Stadia Conference will showcase good practice and policy developments in the cross-cutting fields of sport, health, environmental sustainability, and corporate and social responsibility.
In addition to hearing from clubs such as FC Barcelona, VfL Wolfsburg and Manchester City FC, the conference will include presentations from UEFA's football and social responsibility (FSR) unit. FSR health partners, the World Heart Federation will present further information on its Make A Healthy Heart Your Goal campaign, as well as its plans to address girls and women at UEFA Women's EURO 2013 in Sweden – encouraging them to lead a healthy lifestyle and practise sports such as football to help reduce their risk of heart disease and strokes.
Under the heading of Respect, UEFA's involvement with the conference and the European Healthy Stadia Network continues the efforts of European football's governing body in backing active lifestyles and public health initiatives such as: the Eat for Goals children's cookbook, upholding a tobacco-free UEFA EURO 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine, and UEFA's official health programme for UEFA EURO 2012, namely Respect Your Health: Euroschools 2012.
For the first time, the conference will have a half-day plenary seminar on sustainability and sport, covering the issues of waste management, green transport options and resource conservation. Speakers will discuss a range of environmental, economic and social matters, ranging from reducing the carbon footprint of BBC Sport's outside broadcast unit, to the environmental management of the Republic of Ireland's national stadium.
