Thorsteinsson re-elected in Iceland

Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ) president Geir Thorsteinsson will serve a fourth two-year term after being re-elected as the only candidate at the association's 67th annual congress in Reykjavik.

Thorsteinsson expressed positive views about Iceland's national teams. "A fresh breeze is around the national men's team under Lars Lagerbäck, who is building a new side with many young and promising players," he said. "The women's team is doing well and will play at UEFA Women's EURO 2013 in Sweden in July. The players are very experienced – many played at the 2009 finals and deserve great credit for their success. Coach Sigurdur Ragnar Eyjólfsson and his crew have done a great job again."

Thorsteinsson also praised the sterling work being undertaken at youth and grassroots levels, including important infrastructrure developments carried out with UEFA's help. The KSÍ also won the Best Sponsorship Activation award for its men's and women's league campaign at the recent UEFA KISS marketing awards.

The president further pledged the association's focus on protecting football from elements such as match-fixing. "We must always work together, put our efforts together and unite for the benefit of football," he said. Thorsteinsson also highlighted his organisation's sense of social responsibility, pointing out that the KSÍ recently decided to dedicate the next two years to an initiative against bullying and emotional abuse.
