Swansea stop Chelsea to reach first Wembley final

There will be a new name inscribed on the English League Cup trophy after Swansea City AFC held Chelsea FC 0-0 in south Wales to complete a 2-0 aggregate triumph in their semi-final. The second-leg stalemate was enough to earn Swansea a first-ever major final appearance, with Michael Laudrup's men now facing fourth-division giant-killers Bradford City AFC at Wembley Stadium on 24 February. Chelsea's Gary Cahill and Swansea's Nathan Dyer went closest for either side, with visiting winger Eden Hazard sent off late on.

In the Premier League, meanwhile, Arsenal FC thrashed West Ham United FC 5-1 to move within a point of fifth-placed Everton FC. Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud (2), Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott all scored for the hosts, who swiftly overcame the setback of Jack Collison's opener for West Ham.

France
Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain FC beat Toulouse FC 3-1 in the capital, with Kevin Gameiro, Javier Pastore and Ezequiel Lavezzi registering, but theirs was one of the more comfortable of tonight's French Cup tenth-round victories. League Cup finalists AS Saint-Étienne were taken to penalties away to amateurs CS Meaux in their last-32 tie; the seventh-division team, who played more than 80 minutes with ten men, eventually succumbing 5-3 on spot kicks. FC Girondins de Bordeaux squeezed past fourth-division hosts AS Moulins 2-1, while the top flight's bottom club AS Nancy-Lorraine prevailed 4-2 in a shoot-out away to OGC Nice following a 2-2 draw. FC Sochaux-Montbéliard won 3-2 at Montpellier Hérault SC.

Israel
Hapoel Haifa FC lifted their second Israeli League Cup after a 1-0 extra-time victory over Hapoel Beer Sheva FC in Petah Tikva. Defender Touvarno Pinas scored via a deflection three minutes into overtime, after Beer Sheva striker Ido Exbard had seen an 87th-minute penalty saved by goalkeeper Dreshler Kale. Haifa coach Nir Klinger hoped the success, Hapoel's first in this competition since 2000/01, could inspire a revival for the Premier League's second-bottom club: "It's one of the happiest days of my career. We'll have to work hard to survive in the top league but the journey starts here."

Italy
Following yesterday's 1-1 draw between Juventus and S.S. Lazio, it was advantage AS Roma in tonight's Coppa Italia semi-final first leg after Zdeněk Zeman's side overcame FC Internazionale Milano 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico. Mattia Destro and Alessandro Florenzi found the net after 13 and 33 minutes respectively for a dominant Roma outfit, only for Rodrigo Palacio to reinvigorate Inter on the stroke of half-time. The tie concludes in Milan on 17 April.

Spain
Sevilla FC became the first confirmed Copa del Rey semi-finalist after a 4-0 stroll past nine-man Real Zaragoza in Andalusia. Unai Emery's men never looked back once Zaragoza defender José Fernández was shown a 25th-minute red card for a foul on José Antonio Reyes, with Álvaro Negredo and Ivan Rakitić scoring before the interval. Negredo, with a penalty, and Manu, late on, compounded the misery of a Zaragoza team further handicapped by the 65th-minute dismissal of Fran González. The first leg had ended goalless.

The later quarter-final was also incident packed as Real Madrid CF, holding a 2-0 cushion, drew 1-1 with Valencia CF at the Mestalla. Karim Benzema fired the visitors in front in the 44th minute but, moments after Fábio Coentrão picked up a second yellow card, Tino Costa equalised with a 52nd-minute free-kick. Ángel Di María also received his marching orders in stoppage time as Madrid finished with nine men.
