Bayer 04 Leverkusen clawed back some of the ground they ceded last week to FC Bayern München with a 3-0 home victory against Hamburger SV.
Beaten at Hannover 96 last time out, the Werkself responded by registering their fifth win in six Bundesliga games and in process reduced the lead of Bayern, who on Friday drew 1-1 with VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, to nine points. Stefan Kiessling, with his league-leading 11th and 12th goals of the season, and André Schürrle did the damage for Sascha Lewandowski's men at the BayArena.
Eintracht Frankfurt are up a place to third after triumphing 2-0 at VfL Wolfsburg, who had Josué sent off for two bookings in the first 16 minutes. It ended all square in the encounter between the bottom two − SpVgg Greuther Fürth and FC Augsburg, who have won just twice between them this term – while a late Ken Larsen strike for Fortuna Düsseldorf 1895 condemned Hannover to a 2-1 loss.
Elsewhere, Nicolai Müller scored twice as 1. FSV Mainz 05 came from behind to defeat VfB Stuttgart 3-1. FC Schalke 04 – without a top-flight win since 10 November – had Klaas-Jan Huntelaar sent off late on in a 3-1 home reverse against SC Freiburg, who are now fifth.
