Club Atlético de Madrid cut FC Barcelona's Liga lead back down to three points after battling to a single-goal victory at Granada CF.
Having suffered their first league defeat of the season in their last away game at Valencia CF, Atlético returned to winning ways on the road, condemning Granada to a third straight loss at Los Cármenes. Gabriel Torje struck the post for the hosts following a swift counterattack in the first period, but Arda Turan turned in Koke's cross at the back post to notch the only goal in the 61st minute. Diego Simeone's side then held on for the points, despite having Mario Suárez dismissed with 19 minutes to play.
Levante UD took advantage of Málaga CF's draw on Saturday as they won 2-0 at RC Deportivo La Coruña to go fourth. Obafemi Martins and José Barkero scored the goals, while both sides ended with ten men after Pedro López and Deportivo keeper Daniel Aranzubia were dismissed in the second half.
Sevilla FC took the bragging rights in the Seville derby, beating Real Betis Balompié 5-1 to move seventh, within a point of their city rivals. Things started terribly for Betis, conceding within the first 20 seconds to José Antonio Reyes, before Federico Fazio doubled the lead after five minutes. Both goalscorers grabbed a second and Ivan Rakitić added a fifth late on.
Elsewhere, Getafe CF struck twice in four second-half minutes to come from behind and beat Real Valladolid CF 2-1 – Alexis and Ángel Lafita engineering the turnaround – while RC Celta de Vigo and RCD Mallorca drew 1-1.
