Málaga CF spurned the chance to go third in the Liga after falling to a 2-1 home defeat by Real Sociedad de Fútbol.
Beaten by Rayo Vallecano de Madrid last weekend – their first defeat at La Rosaleda in any competition this season – Málaga got off to the worst possible start against Sociedad when Carlos Vela struck inside a minute for the visitors. Javier Saviola's third league goal of the campaign pulled the hosts level just prior to the interval, but Xabier Prieto's calm finish just before the hour wrapped up the victory for Philippe Montanier's side.
At the other end of the table, bottom side CA Osasuna are just two points from safety after a 3-0 win at 19th-placed RCD Espanyol. The other team in the relegation zone, RC Deportivo La Coruña, lost 5-3 at Real Zaragoza, while Rayo Vallecano de Madrid were 3-2 victors against RC Celta de Vigo.
