Montpellier Hérault SC and LOSC Lille joined AS Saint-Étienne in the semi-finals of the French League Cup, which carries a UEFA Europa League berth. Montpellier overcame OGC Nice 3-2, Jonathan Tinhan coming off the bench to settle a tie both teams had led.

LOSC triumphed 3-0 at SC Bastia courtesy of Gianni Bruno, Roddy Ronelin and substitute Djibril Sidibé. The semi-finals are in mid-January and the draw is on Thursday, when Stade Rennais FC and ES Troyes Aube Champagne compete for the remaining place.

Spain
There were few worries for Liga sides as they moved into the Copa del Rey last 16. Holders FC Barcelona were already 3-0 up from the away leg as they welcomed Deportivo Alavés, and although Borja Viguera struck early for the visitors, Adriano responded before the break. David Villa scored twice after the break to make it 6-1 overall. Barcelona now play Córdoba CF, conquerors of Real Sociedad de Fútbol on Tuesday.

The other current UEFA Champions League contenders in action, Valencia CF, saw off UD Llagostera 3-1, 5-1 on aggregate, with CA Osasuna now awaiting. Raúl García's goal for Club Atlético de Madrid added to their 3-0 first-leg win at Real Jaén CF and they now have a derby with Getafe CF, who were able to afford a goalless home draw against SD Ponferradina having held a 4-0 lead.

In the night's sole all-Liga tie, Sevilla FC went to RCD Espanyol holding a 3-1 cushion, and after the home side were reduced to ten men early on the visitors sailed to a 3-0 success. Levante UD trailed UD Melilla 1-0 going into their home second leg but a 4-1 victory ensured the top-flight side's progress. Like Real Madrid CF – who went through on Tuesday – Sevilla and Levante must wait for the remaining three ties to be played to discover their opposition for the next stage in mid-December.

Italy
Five more slots in the Coppa Italia last 16, where the top eight seeds enter, were filled, a day after Serie B outfit Hellas Verona FC beat US Città di Palermo 2-1 to set up an encounter with FC Internazionale Milano. Another second-tier side are through, Reggina Calcio winning 1-0 at AC Chievo Verona in wet conditions and they net face AC Milan.

Bologna FC will face holders SSC Napoli after beating AS Livorno Calcio 1-0 courtesy of Cristian Pasquato's first-half shot. Atalanta BC came from behind to defeat AC Cesena 3-1 with two Facundo Parra goals. AC Siena earned a meeting with S.S. Lazio thanks to their 2-0 triumph over Torino FC, and ACF Fiorentina won by the same scoreline against S.S. Juve Stabia to advance to play Udinese Calcio.
