Genoa CFC have parted company with coach Luigi De Canio in the wake of their 4-2 home defeat against AS Roma on Sunday with Luigi Del Neri confirmed as his replacement.
The 55-year-old De Canio was appointed this summer for a second spell at Genoa having briefly been at the helm in 2003/04. However, nine points in the first eight Serie A games were not enough for the former Queen Park Rangers FC and US Lecce coach to keep his job.
"It was right to change now," said club president Enrico Preziosi. "I moved quickly to negotiate with Del Neri because I feared he could have signed for another club in the next few days."
Del Neri, 62, had been without a club since the end of the 2010/11 season when he coached Juventus and has agreed a two-year contract with Genoa. After making his name with AC Chievo Verona, Del Neri has also coached Roma, US Città di Palermo, Genoa's neighbours UC Sampdoria and Atalanta BC in Serie A.
