Paul Scholes marked his 700th appearance for Manchester United FC with a goal as Sir Alex Ferguson's side defeated Wigan Athletic FC, while Arsenal FC overwhelmed Southampton FC and Chelsea FC and Manchester City FC were held to draws.
Scholes (51) turned the ball in from close range after Ali Al-Habsi had palmed out Nani's cross. The Wigan goalkeeper had earlier saved a first-half penalty from Javier Hernández, who doubled the hosts' lead on 63 minutes. Left-back Alexander Büttner and midfielder Nick Powell rounded off the scoring on their respective debuts.
Premier League leaders Chelsea, who had won their first three top-flight games, were held 0-0 at west London neighbours Queens Park Rangers FC. Manchester City drew 1-1 at Stoke City FC thanks to Javier García's headed equaliser on his first appearance for the champions.
Arsenal were the day's biggest winners, Gervinho scoring twice in a 6-1 defeat of Southampton, a feat Dimitar Berbatov matched as Fulham FC prevailed 3-0 against ten-man West Bromwich Albion FC. Elsewhere, Liverpool FC earned a 1-1 draw at Sunderland AFC, Aston Villa FC beat Swansea City AFC 2-0 and Norwich City FC drew 0-0 with West Ham United FC.
