Reigning champions Borussia Dortmund were held to a draw at 1. FC Nürnberg, while Eintracht Frankfurt continued their fine start to the season to go top of the Bundesliga.

After beginning their title defence with a defeat of SV Werder Bremen on the opening day, Dortmund's confidence was high ahead of their first away trip of the campaign. But Jürgen Klopp's side had to come back from behind to earn a point against Nürnberg after Tomáš Pekhart scored on 31 minutes. Jakub Błaszczykowski equalised nine minutes later.

Frankfurt had no such trouble on their travels, confidently dispatching Hoffenheim 4-0. Two goals in four minutes just before the break from Alexander Meier and Primin Schwegler gave the visitors a 2-0 lead, before Hoffenheim duo Sejad Salihović and Stephan Schröck were both dismissed midway through the second period for earning two bookings. Meier's penalty and Martin Lanig made it four late on.

FC Schalke 04 moved second in the table on goal difference, two points behind the leaders, as Kyriakos Papodopoulos, Jermaine Jones and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar earned them a 3-1 home win against FC Augsburg. Elsewhere, there were home wins for Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Werder Bremen against SC Freiburg and Hamburger SV respectively. Leverkusen's fellow UEFA Europa League hopefuls VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach drew 0-0 at Fortuna Düsseldorf 1895.
