AC Milan were left licking their wounds after beginning their Serie A campaign with a surprise 1-0 loss at home to promoted UC Sampdoria.
The visitors had not won this fixture since 2008 yet they signalled their return to the top flight in stunning fashion. New Milan signing Giampaolo Pazzini came off the bench to face his old side with 56 minutes gone, but just moments later he and his colleagues were behind, Andrea Costa heading in from a corner. Although Kevin-Prince Boateng connected with the crossbar late on, Sampdoria survived to record a famous win.
The Rossoneri's city neighbours FC Internazionale Milano started better as they got things rolling with a 3-0 win at Pescara, Wesley Sneijder and Diego Milito hitting first-half strikes before Coutinho rounded off the result late on. SSC Napoli triumphed by the same scoreline, taking all three points at US Città di Palermo, while Hernanes gifted S.S. Lazio a 1-0 opening win at Atalanta BC and Nicolás López salvaged a 2-2 draw for AS Roma against Calcio Catania in added time.
Elsewhere, Genoa CFC saw off Cagliari Calcio 2-0, which was also AC Chievo Verona's margin of victory against Bologna FC, and the match between AC Siena and Torino FC ended goalless.
