Reus recognised as Germany's best player

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus has been named Germany's footballer of the year for 2012, with Jürgen Klopp winning the coaches' accolade.

Reus, whose 18 Bundesliga goals last term inspired VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach to a fourth-place finish, beat Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski to the award in a poll of sports journalists organised by Kicker magazine. 

The 23-year-old – who featured twice for Germany at UEFA EURO 2012, scoring in the 4-2 quarter-final victory against Greece – is now focused on surpassing those efforts, having joined Dortmund in a €17.5m deal which was originally announced in January. 

"I am so proud because this is an achievement that will stay with me forever," he said. "It will also act as further motivation for the upcoming season, where I want to be twice as good."

Klopp was recognised for his feat of guiding Dortmund to their second successive league title. The 45-year-old finished ahead of Mönchengladbach's Lucien Favre and SC Freiburg's Christian Streich. "It's a great honour and another acknowledgement for our entire coaching staff. It shows that we aren't doing such a bad job," said Klopp.

German international Célia Okoyino da Mbabi scooped the women's footballer of the year prize.
