Midfielder Marco Reus, who made an impression in two games at UEFA EURO 2012, has been voted 2011/12 Bundesliga's player of the season by the members of the German players' union, VDV.
The 23-year-old, who has joined Borussia Dortmund from VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach this summer, received 30% of the vote to finish ahead of FC Bayern München's Franck Ribéry (16.3%) and the league's top scorer, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar of FC Schalke 04 (12.5%). David Alaba (27.4%) was named as newcomer of the season ahead of Mönchengladbach pair Patrick Herrmann (16.6%) and Marc-André ter Stegen (12.5%).
Meanwhile, Mönchengladbach's Swiss coach Lucien Favre won the coach of the year award with 43.3% of the vote, finishing ahead of Dortmund double winner Jürgen Klopp (38.5%). Favre has signed an extension to his contract with the club until 2015, having led Gladbach to a fourth-placed finish following his appointment in February last year. "I'm looking forward to the attractive challenges ahead of us," said Favre, whose team start their UEFA Champions League campaign in the play-offs.
