Śląsk land second Polish title

WKS Śląsk Wroclaw have won the Polish title for the second time in their history after a 1-0 win at Wisła Kraków in the last round of Ekstraklasa matches maintained their one-point advantage over closest pursuers Ruch Chorzów.

Prior to kick-off, four teams had hopes of claiming the title, but leaders Śląsk knew victory would be enough to stave off their challengers. The visitors warmed to their task shortly after the break and clinched the decisive goal courtesy of Rok Elsner’s 52nd-minute header, whch prompted delirium among the travelling support. For coach Orest Lenczyk, it was the 69-year-old's first title for 34 years.

"It is hard to believe I am a champion again," said Lenczyk. "I've waited 34 long years for this, and if someone else in my family achieves this in another 34 years, it probably won't be me, but my grandson. The second part of the year was really dramatic and we lost leadership for some time. I believed we would get a European place, but was not sure about the title."

Club captain Sebastian Mila also expressed his delight: "I have been a champion in Austria, but to win it in my native country is an amazing and unique feeling. I am proud to be captain of this group of players. My fiancée and daughter are the most important people to me, but I hope they will understand when I arrive home later than usual."
