Kilmarnock FC claimed the Scottish League Cup for the first time in their history after defying the odds to beat Celtic FC 1-0 at Hampden Park.
Substitute Dieter Van Tornhout and goalkeeper Cameron Bell were the heroes for the Ayrshire club, the Belgian striker celebrating his 27th birthday with a headed goal six minutes from time while Bell was named man of the match for a string of impressive saves. The result ended Celtic's run of 26 domestic matches unbeaten and extinguished manager Neil Lennon's hopes of winning a domestic treble.
"I feel very emotional at the moment – brilliant, fantastic," said Bell. "It just shows how much commitment the boys had; we did it for the manager. Everybody dreams, but we are realistic. I think the boys were fantastic. I think we deserved to win; I had a few saves to make, but you are going to have to against Celtic."
"You have to believe to achieve and we worked hard on getting the boys to believe," manager Kenny Shiels added. "Celtic are a young team and there is always that strain on them to succeed, so we talked up their treble chances. I knew it would be difficult for them if we kept the ball because Celtic were the team under pressure."
