It was a day to remember in the Premier League for Didier Drogba and Nikica Jelavić as the former's 100th goal in the English top flight secured Chelsea FC victory before the latter's first for Everton FC condemned Tottenham Hotspur FC to defeat.
Drogba (68), running on to Juan Mata's pass, rounded Stoke City FC goalkeeper Asmir Begović for the only goal of the game at Stamford Bridge as Roberto Di Matteo gained his second win since succeeding André Villas-Boas on an interim basis. The visitors had been down to ten men since Ricardo Fuller's 25th-minute dismissal.
The Blues, who host SSC Napoli on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League round of 16, are fifth, four points behind third-placed Tottenham. Harry Redknapp's team lost 1-0 at improving Everton, for whom Jelavić (22) opened his account with a neat finish across Brad Friedel.
Everton's city rivals, Liverpool FC, succumbed – like Tottenham – to their third successive league defeat, 1-0 at Sunderland AFC, while Aston Villa FC overcame Fulham FC thanks to Andreas Weimann's maiden strike (90+3) for the club.
Queens Park Rangers FC dropped into the bottom three after losing 2-1 at relegation rivals Bolton Wanderers FC, and a Junior Hoilett double against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers FC lifted Blackburn Rovers FC three points clear of trouble.
