Manchester United FC consolidated their position at the top of the table after Wayne Rooney's hat-trick contributed to a comprehensive 5-0 win at Bolton Wanderers FC, while Sergio Agüero continued his scintillating form, scoring all three goals in Manchester City FC's 3-0 home win against Wigan Athletic FC.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side took control from the outset, racing into a 3-0 lead within 25 minutes as Rooney's double complemented Javier Hernández's opener. The rout was completed after the break with further goals from Hernández and Rooney - who has now scored eight goals in four league starts.

Fellow title-contenders Manchester City continued their perfect start as Agüero profited from the ingenuity of David Silva and Samir Nasri while goals from John Terry and Daniel Sturridge gave Chelsea a 2-1 win at Sunderland AFC. Liverpool FC's unbeaten start to the season ended with a 1-0 loss at Stoke City FC, after Jon Walters converted from the spot 21 minutes in.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur FC registered their first points with second-half goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermaine Defoe securing a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. Arsenal FC defeated Swansea City FC 1-0 while Aston Villa twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Everton FC.
