Stefano Pioli has become the second Serie A coach to lose his job before the start of the season after being dismissed by US Città di Palermo.
The 45-year-old, who only took over at the Stadio Renzo Barbera in June having helped AC Chievo Verona to avoid relegation, has been replaced by Devis Mangia. Pioli has paid the price for Palermo's elimination on away goals by FC Thun in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round.
Pioli follows Roberto Donadoni, sacked by Cagliari Calcio at the start of the month, in leaving his post before a ball has been kicked in the 2011/12 Italian top flight.
Like his predecessor, Mangia also joined last season's Coppa Italia finalists this summer. The 37-year-old took control of the Rosanero's youth side after his achievement in guiding AS Varese to the final of last term's Campionato Primavera tournament.
On a busy final day of the transfer window, Palermo sold Antonio Nocerino to AC Milan but signed three players: midfielders Edgar Barreto (Atalanta BC), Francesco Della Rocca (Bologna FC) and winger Edgar Álvarez (AS Bari).
