Michael Mifsud continued his fine form with a hat-trick as champions Valletta FC defeated FA Trophy holders Floriana FC 3-0 in the Maltese Super Cup.
Having scored twice in a 2-1 friendly victory over the Central African Republic last week Malta captain Mifsud was simply irresistible. He broke the deadlock before half-time and converted a penalty just after the hour to set Valletta on their way at the Ta'Qali National Stadium. Floriana had no answer and the 30-year-old, who also hit the woodwork twice, secured the match ball nine minutes from time.
It sealed Valletta's ninth triumph in the Maltese season curtain-raiser, which bodes well ahead of Sunday's Premier League opener against Tarxien Rainbows FC. Last term's runners-up Floriana, who hit the crossbar through Ivan Woods in added time, kick off their campaign at home to Mqabba FC 24 hours earlier.
