Ten-man KR Reykjavík sealed a record 12th Icelandic Cup triumph courtesy of a 2-0 victory against final debutants Thór Akureyri.
The capital club had the crossbar to thank for keeping the promoted side at bay in the opening period before Gunnar Már Gunnarsson turned the ball into his own net to give KR a 1-0 lead at the break. KR found themselves a man down when Skúli Jón Fridgeirsson was dismissed on 68 minutes, but Baldur Sigurdsson's goal nine minutes from time secured the victory.
"We go into every game aiming to win; this time there was a cup at stake and it was great to land the trophy," said KR coach Rúnar Kristinsson. "The feeling of winning the cup is great and both teams had great support which made the game enjoyable. We played against a good Thór team which gave us a lot of trouble the whole game, but in the second half I think we managed to keep the ball a little bit more and Thór couldn't keep up with us."
