Mario Gomez hit a hat-trick as FC Bayern München went top of the Bundesliga thanks to a fifth successive victory in all competitions, 3-0 at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, before Bayer 04 Leverkusen drew 0-0 with Borussia Dortmund.

A year to the day since losing 2-0 in last season's corresponding fixture, Bayern celebrated a win which leaves them level on points with SV Werder Bremen at the summit of the fledgling table. Gomez, a scorer of six hat-tricks last term, took his tally to five goals in three matches with a first-half penalty and subsequent strikes on 55 and 69 minutes.

Bremen also won away from home, 2-1 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim courtesy of Markus Rosenberg's late volley, while Michal Kadlec and Mario Götze were sent off in the second half of the goalless draw between Leverkusen and Dortmund.

Elsewhere, substitute Kevin McKenna struck the decisive blow as 1. FC Köln recovered from 3-2 down with six minutes remaining to beat Hamburger SV − for whom Serbia defender Slobodan Rajković scored on his debut − 4-3.

HSV are bottom with one point from four games, two places below FC Augsburg, beaten 1-0 at 1. FC Nürnberg. VfL Wolfsburg lost 3-0 to SC Freiburg.
