Bayer 04 Leverkusen collected their first points of the season thanks to Michal Kadlec's decisive late strike in a 1-0 defeat of SV Werder Bremen, while promoted FC Augsburg secured a 1-1 draw at 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
Already out of the German Cup and defeated 2-0 by 1. FSV Mainz 05 in their maiden assignment of the new Bundesliga season, UEFA Champions League contenders Leverkusen finally gave new coach Robin Dutt a first win. They were made to wait for their breakthrough, though, Czech international defender Kadlec blasting in off a post following a corner with four minutes remaining.
There was a late goal in Kaiserslautern too as the hosts had Etey Shechter's 80th-minute low finish to thank for staving off defeat. Augsburg had earlier gone ahead when Sascha Mölders fired into the top-left corner after nine minutes to add to his double in the newcomers' opening 2-2 draw with SC Freiburg.
