FC Bayern München suffered a surprise home defeat in their opening encounter of the new Bundesliga season after a lapse at the back allowed VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach to come away with a 1-0 success.
Igor De Camargo struck the only goal of the game for the visitors on 62 minutes after Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and defender Jerome Boateng – both summer signings – failed to deal with a long ball from the back. The Belgian international was able to head in from the edge of the area to give Mönchengladbach, who narrowly avoided relegation last term, a memorable start to the campaign.
In Sunday's other match, 1. FSV Mainz 05 overcame 2010/11 runners-up Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-0, Sami Allagui opening the scoring with 32 minutes gone before Ömer Toprak's late own goal sealed the result.
