Olympique Lyonnais recorded a 2-0 victory at AS Monaco FC that books their place in next season's UEFA Champions League play-off round – but relegates their hosts from Ligue 1.
While LOSC Lille Métropole and Olympique de Marsille had already made sure of the top two positions, and UEFA Champions League group stage berths, before Sunday's concluding round, third-placed Lyon led PSG by only two points at kick-off.
Meanwhile, Monaco needed a good result in their 2000th top-flight match to escape the bottom three and prolong their 34-season stay in the division, with six other clubs in potential danger of joining RC Lens and AC Arles-Avignon in Ligue 2.
Following a tight opening hour, Pape Diakhaté broke the deadlock for Lyon midway through the second half after Sébastien Chabbert could only parry a Maxime Gonalons effort. With eight minutes left, Lisandro sealed Monaco's demise from Aly Cissokho's centre.
PSG were held 1-1 by AS Saint-Étienne and will enter the UEFA Europa League in the play-off round along with FC Sochaux-Montbéliard, who beat Arles 3-1 to take fifth place from Stade Rennais FC, themselves to start in the third qualifying round after losing 3-2 to double winners Lille.
The team most relieved by the Monaco result were OGC Nice, surviving by two points despite a 2-1 loss to Valenciennes FC − another of the clubs who began the day in danger.
