Grønkjær announces retirement plan

Jesper Grønkjær has confirmed that FC København's final Super League game of the season on Sunday will mark the end of his professional career.

The 33-year-old former AFC Ajax, Chelsea FC, Birmingham City FC, Club Atlético de Madrid and VfB Stuttgart winger will sign off against his first club, Aalborg BK, on the day København celebrate winning a third successive Danish title. Grønkjær made the last of his 80 Denmark appearances at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

"I have decided to end my career while I still have the joy and motivation to play," said the Greenland-born player, who has been with København for five seasons. "The journey with FCK has been an adventure and I have seen things I won't forget. I am and have been extremely happy here and I am proud to have had the opportunity to come home to a club that was so determined to enter the international scene and that has done so."

FCK sporting director Carsten Jensen added: "Jesper has set new standards for players coming home after spells abroad. We can only be happy that Jesper chose København when it was time for him to return to Danish football. In spite of a couple of tough injury breaks Jesper has managed to fight his way back and his best performances have been at the highest international level."

Grønkjær, a Dutch Cup winner with Ajax in 1999, has now lifted four Danish titles with FCK in addition to the 2009 Danish Cup.
