SK Sturm Graz have been crowned Austrian Bundesliga champions for a third time after defeating FC Wacker Innsbruck 2-1 at home, while closest challengers FK Austria Wien finished third after they slumped to a 4-2 defeat against FC Salzburg.
Prior to the game, Sturm were two points ahead of Austria knowing a point would be enough to secure the title due to their superior goal difference. They made the perfect start when, after 15 minutes, Florian Kainz set up Andreas Hölzl who finished clinically from close range. Innsbruck struck back 14 minutes later when Alexander Hauser met Thomas Bergmann's cross, planting his header high into the net. With four minutes remaining, Samir Muratović secured victory for the home side.
"I'm extremely proud of this team," said Sturm manager Franco Foda after the final whistle. "They once more put in a fantastic performance today. Nobody expected us to be contenders for the title ahead of the season. The players came on in leaps and bounds throughout the season and in the end we deserved to win the championship."
