AFC Ajax have announced the signing of Dutch international midfielder Theo Janssen on a two-year contract from fellow Eredivisie side FC Twente for an undisclosed fee.
The 29-year-old was named Dutch player of the year this season having been influential in Twente's run to the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals and the defeat of Ajax in the Dutch Cup final.
Janssen scored 13 league goals this campaign but narrowly missed out on his second successive Eredivisie championship under Michel Preud'homme's stewardship, Twente finishing two points adrift of Ajax after losing a title decider on the final day of the season.
"I want to become champions again," said Janssen. "I leave Twente with a good feeling, they are a top club. They will be at the top again next season. When I arrived there, I had a more controlling role but under Preud'homme I was given more freedom. He [Preud'homme] said from the first day on, 'You will become the best player in Eredivisie'."
