Manchester United FC moved to within a point of their 19th English crown with a 2-1 victory against title rivals Chelsea FC at Old Trafford.
Javier Hernández put United ahead inside 40 seconds with his 13th goal of the season before Nemanja Vidić doubled the lead midway through the first half. Frank Lampard responded for Chelsea on 68 minutes, but despite a spell of late pressure from the visitors, United held on for the win. Sir Alex Ferguson's side are now six points clear at the top of the table and need just one point against Blackburn Rovers FC on Saturday to seal the title.
Stoke City FC prepared for next weekend's FA Cup final in perfect fashion as they defeated Arsenal FC 3-1. Kenwyne Jones and Jermaine Pennant gave the hosts a 2-0 lead at the break before Robin van Persie halved the deficit, but Jonathan Walters' 12th goal in all competitions this term then sealed the win for the Potters. At the bottom, a Steven Fletcher double helped Wolverhampton Wanderers FC beat West Bromwich Albion FC 3-1 to lift the Midlands club into 17th place.
