LOSC Lille Métropole's Ligue 1 lead is back to four points after Olympique de Marseille returned to winning ways on Wednesday.
Loïc Rémy (12) set OM on their way to a comfortable 3-0 victory against Stade Brestois 29 with Jordan Ayew and Gabriel Heinze adding the other strikes after the interval to keep alive their hopes of retaining the title, having taken just one point from their previous two games.
Third-placed Olympique Lyonnais, who defeated Marseille 3-2 on Sunday, undid all of their good work as they capitulated at AJ Auxerre. Their 4-0 defeat was undoubtedly influenced by the first-half dismissal of Dejan Lovren, although the hosts were already ahead by then thanks to Dennis Oliech's opener. Two Alain Traoré goals either side of half-time put the match beyond reach and Auxerre's survival hopes were further boosted by Cédric Hengbart's strike.
Lyon trail Marseille by six points and will have a battle on their hands to remain in the last UEFA Champions League berth, with Paris Saint-Germain FC just a point back. Fifth-placed Stade Rennais FC failed to take advantage, drawing 1-1 at home against struggling SM Caen, but FC Sochaux-Montbéliard are now within a point of Frédéric Antonetti's side following their 3-0 home win against AS Monaco FC, who remain threatened by relegation.
Elsewhere, Montpellier Hérault FC and OGC Nice also scored three goals each, in respective victories against FC Lorient and AC Arles-Avignon, FC Girondins de Bordeaux succumbed 1-0 at RC Lens and Toulouse FC were held to a goalless draw by Valenciennes FC.
