1. FSV Mainz 05 strengthened their position in the hunt for a European place next season after a late André Schürrle strike downed bottom club VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Fifth-placed Mainz needed a victory to open up a five-point gap to 1. FC Nürnberg but they looked set to be frustrated, even after the visitors had Mike Hanke dismissed after 53 minutes. However, with just three minutes remaining, Schürrle unleashed a spectacular effort from 25 metres to decide the outcome and leave Mönchengladbach four points from safety with the rest of the weekend's action to come.
