Hannover 96 missed the chance to leapfrog Bayer 04 Leverkusen into second place in the Bundesliga as they slumped to a 4-0 reverse at mid-table 1. FC Köln.
Two points behind Leverkusen following three successive league victories, Hannover's hopes of another success decreased from the moment Petit fired in a 36th-minute free-kick.
Lukas Podolski burst through the visiting defence and calmly slotted in his 11th goal of the season to make it 2-0 on the hour, before Milivoje Novakovič matched his strike partner's tally with two close-range finishes in the final 11 minutes.
