FC Internazionale Milano closed the gap between them and Serie A leaders AC Milan to five points – it was 13 in mid-December – on a night of derby joy for Genoa CFC, FC St Pauli and Bolton Wanderers FC.
Italy
Inter recovered from their weekend setback against Juventus to edge ever closer to Milan with a 2-1 victory at ACF Fiorentina. The Nerazzurri forged ahead through Michele Camporese's own goal (6) and though the hosts levelled through Manuel Pasqual (33), Giampaolo Pazzini's fourth goal in five games since joining last month earned the points. Pazzini's former club UC Sampdoria suffered a 1-0 derby defeat at home to Genoa, Rafinha scoring the only goal on 55 minutes.
Germany
St Pauli maintained their fine start to the year with a 1-0 victory at Hamburger SV. The hosts dominated the early stages of a game originally postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, but when the unmarked Ruud van Nistelrooy missed a gilt-edged chance on half-time the tide turned. Gerald Asamoah made no mistake when presented with a similar opening from Max Kruse's corner before the hour and St Pauli withstood late pressure to make it 11 points in five games this year.
England
Bolton will travel to Fulham FC in the last 16 of the FA Cup on Sunday after a 1-0 victory at local rivals Wigan Athletic FC. Ivan Klasnić scored the only goal midway through the second half and a Jordi Gómez effort that struck the bar a few minutes later was as close as a much-changed Wigan side came to an equaliser. Johan Elmander earlier hit the inside of a post for Bolton.
