Petr Čech saved Chelsea FC from defeat in the west London derby against Fulham FC by saving Clint Dempsey's injury-time penalty in a goalless draw at Craven Cottage.
After Chelsea had failed to convert their supremacy into goals they almost finished empty-handed when David Luiz, on his full debut after arriving from SL Benfica, brought Dempsey down only for Čech to save the American's low spot-kick. The stalemate continues Chelsea's mixed form and they remain fifth in the Premier League, two points behind Tottenham Hotspur FC, with Fulham 12th.
In Spain, RCD Mallorca denied Athletic Club the chance to close the gap on fourth-placed Villarreal CF by earning a first win in five matches at Son Moix. Pierre Webó scored the goal that lifted Mallorca up to tenth in the Liga after 11 minutes, converting a cross by Jonathan De Guzmán. Mikel San José went close to an equaliser for Athletic but his second-half header hit a post as the visitors' four-match winning streak ended.
Fenerbahçe SK climbed second in Turkey with a 2-0 home victory over fourth-placed Kayserispor – their fifth straight win in the Super League achieved thanks to a goal in each half from Mamadou Niang and Diego Lugano.
