Manchester United FC won for the 13th time in 14 home league games, beating Manchester City FC 2-1 thanks to an overhead kick from Wayne Rooney before Arsenal FC prevailed.

A superb overhead kick from Wayne Rooney proved decisive as Manchester United FC consolidated their position at the Premier League summit with a 2-1 victory against Manchester City FC.

Rooney's acrobatic effort (78) from Nani's looping, right-wing cross came 13 minutes after the visitors fortuitously equalised, when Edin Džeko's shot went in via the back of David Silva. Nani (41) had originally given United the lead before half-time, passing the ball beyond Joe Hart after being released by Ryan Giggs' first-time pass.

Arsenal FC, in second, trimmed the Red Devils' lead back to four points after defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers FC 2-0 courtesy of Robin van Persie's double – his tenth and 11th goals this year. Raúl Meireles, meanwhile, scored his fifth in six games for Liverpool FC, whose run of four successive wins was ended by a 1-1 home draw with Wigan Athletic FC.

Elsewhere, Dember Ba struck twice as West Ham United FC recovered from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with West Bromwich Albion FC, while Blackpool FC-Aston Villa FC finished 1-1. Birmingham City FC overcame Stoke City FC 1-0 and Blackburn Rovers FC against Newcastle United FC ended goalless. Sunderland AFC lost 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur FC, who rise to fourth, in the late game.
