LOSC Lille Métropole's Ligue 1 lead has been whittled down to just two points after Rudi Garcia's charges suffered their first league defeat since 24 October at the hands of Montpellier Hérault FC.

Lille had gone 13 Ligue 1 matches without losing before Younés Belhanda popped up to end their unbeaten sequence with a winner six minutes from time. The result hauled Montpellier, who also knocked Lille out of the French League Cup, up to sixth spot and left the northerners looking nervously over their shoulders.

Stade Rennais FC are the team applying most pressure following their hard-fought success at Toulouse FC in the late kick-off. Kévin Théophile-Catherine appeared to have inadvertently earned hosts Toulouse a point after his own goal (61) cancelled out Yann M'Vila's opener (45), but Victor Montano's 88th-minute penalty ultimately wrapped up a crucial win for Rennes .

Paris Saint-Germain FC are four points behind Lille, and level on 41 points with fourth-placed Olympique Lyonnais, following their 3-0 win against ten-man OGC Nice. Ludovic Giuly (24), Guillaume Hoarau (44) and Sylvain Armand (74) did the damage before Drissa Diakite was sent off (79) to compound the misery of a Nice side now hovering just two points above the relegation zone.
