Ligue 1 duo Stade Brestois 29 and FC Girondins de Bordeaux were stunned by lower-league opposition as SO Chambéry and Angers SCO respectively progressed to the French Cup round of 16 at their expense.
Bordeaux, who are tenth in the top flight, succumbed when Sébastien Renouard (65) struck the only goal of the game for Ligue 2 team Angers, but the biggest shock came when Chambéry, of the fifth tier, won on penalties for the second time in the competition.
With the score goalless after 90 minutes, Bruno Grougi looked to have won it for Brest (109) in extra time but the hosts, who defeated AS Monaco FC in the last round, levelled through Malik Faye (117) before holding their nerve on spot kicks.
It was also a triumphant night for amateur sides JA Drancy and FC Martigues. The former eliminated Ligue 2 outfit US Boulogne, thanks to Karim Herouat's winner, while the latter overcame fellow amateurs US Quevilly. AS Nancy-Lorraine and FC Lorient required extra time to knock out Nîmes Olympique and Vendée Fontenay Foot respectively.
Elsewhere, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard, Ligue 2 sides Stade de Reims, FC Nantes and Le Mans UC 72 and third-tier outfit RC Strasbourg progressed to the next round, while in the only league match of the day RC Lens overcame SM Caen 2-0.
