RC Deportivo La Coruña and holders Sevilla FC booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey on a night when Josep Guardiola guided FC Barcelona through on away goals in his 150th match in charge.
Having been frustrated by Athletic Club in a goalless first leg two weeks ago, Barcelona found their stoic opponents tough to break down again at San Mamés until Eric Abidal calmly stroked in his first goal for the Azulgrana 15 minutes from time. Though Fernando Llorente (85) poked in an equaliser, the hosts could not get the second they needed to advance.
Leading 5-3 against Málaga CF, Sevilla underlined their superiority with a 3-0 victory in the return. Ndri Romaric – who struck two goals in the first encounter – was among the scorers for the visitors at La Rosaleda. Málaga, who had Weligton sent off (72), gave debuts to new signings Martín Demichelis, Enzo Maresca, Ignacio Camacho and on-loan goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo.
Adrián scored a hat-trick, his first effort a 90th-minute equaliser from the spot following the dismissal of Miguel Ángel Tena, as Deportivo defeated Córdoba CF 3-1 after extra time and 4-2 on aggregate. The remaining five ties take place on Thursday.
