Olympique de Marseille made the most of adverse conditions to move to the top of Ligue 1 after a 4-0 victory against Montpellier Hérault SC.

Only last weekend Montpellier had themselves moved to the top of the French top-flight but, on a snowbound pitch, Réné Girard's men were no match for the French champions, who rattled off goals from Lucho González (20), Bruno Cheyrou (28), Mathieu Valbuena (65) and Loïc Rémy (90) to take first place on goal difference from LOSC Lille Métropole.

In the late kick-off, Lille missed out on the chance to retain top spot. Despite Moussa Sow's opening goal (35) of their match with FC Girondins de Bordeaux, an own goal by Adil Rami (51) proved costly.

Stade Rennais FC would also have moved above OM had they not come unstuck at FC Lorient, but Jacques-Alaixys Romao (61) and Jérémy Morel (86) saw to it that the hosts ran out 2-0 winners, leaving Rennes a point behind the pacesetters.

Stade Brestois 29's fate was out of their hands as heavy snow caused the abandonment of their home match with RC Lens, leaving them level on points with Rennes, Bordeaux and Paris Saint-Germain FC, who will go top with a win at Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday.

Elsewhere, AS Monaco FC and AS Nancy-Lorraine shared respective 1-1 draws with OGC Nice and AS Saint-Etienne while Valenciennes FC overcame AC Arles-Avignon 3-0.
