Sevilla sunk after Espanyol go forth

Sevilla FC squandered the chance to move fourth in the Liga, losing 2-1 to RCD Mallorca after two late penalties helped RCD Espanyol take that spot with a sixth straight home win.

RCD Espanyol are back up to fourth place in the Liga following a 3-0 win against Hércules CF, to which Sevilla FC were unable to respond.

After Pablo Osvaldo and Luis García converted late penalties − the first coming when visiting goalkeeper Juan Calatayud was sent off for fouling Osvaldo − in a victory which maintained their 100% home record, Sevilla missed the chance to replace them in fourth. The UEFA Europa League contenders were beaten 2-1 at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán by RCD Mallorca, Pierre Webó (90) heading the winner moments after Luís Fabiano had equalised.

That leaves Sevilla in seventh, two points shy of Espanyol and one place behind Club Atlético de Madrid, who struck three times in 11 second-half minutes en route to a 4-2 triumph at Real Sociedad de Fútbol. Elsewhere, Masoud Shojaei was the match-winner for mid-table CA Osasuna in a 1-0 defeat of lowly Real Sporting de Gijón, RC Deportivo La Coruña overcame third-bottom Málaga CF 3-0 and ten-man Real Racing Club succumbed 3-1 to Levante UD. Bottom-of-the-table Real Zaragoza visit Getafe CF on Monday.
