José Mourinho's unbeaten record as Real Madrid CF coach remains intact after a 1-0 win at Real Sporting de Gijón that took them back to the top of the Liga table.
FC Barcelona assumed the ascendancy with victory against Villarreal CF on Saturday, but Madrid responded in kind and are once again a point clear at the summit. They were made to work hard in Gijon, though, and were kept at bay until eight minutes from time when Gonzalo Higuaín followed up Karim Benzema's only partially saved header. There was still time for the hosts to have Alberto Botía sent off for a foul on Cristiano Ronaldo.
Sevilla FC, who also ended with ten men following Fernando Navarro's dismissal, struck even later to win 2-1 at Real Zaragoza, Álvaro Negredo finding the net in the final minute to take his team up to fifth spot. Valencia CF, meanwhile are fourth having defeated Getafe CF 2-0. RCD Espanyol lie sixth after being held 0-0 at Real Racing Club, while the meeting between RCD Mallorca and RC Deportivo La Coruña also finished goalless.
Eliseu hit the winner as Málaga CF prevailed 1-0 at home to second-bottom Levante UD to move out of the relegation zone. Hércules CF also clambered clear of danger courtesy of a 2-1 triumph against Real Sociedad de Fútbol.
