Jönsson strike gives Swedish Cup to Helsingborg

After narrowly missing out on the league title last weekend, Helsingborgs IF softened the blow by defeating Hammarby IF 1-0 to win their fourth Swedish Cup in a final played at their opponents' Söderstadion home in Stockholm.

Rasmus Jönsson struck the only goal ten minutes from time for the Allsvenskan runners-up. Up until then, goalkeeper Johannes Hopf had kept Hammarby in the match with the visitors pouring forward from the off. Hammarby were without injured striker Linus Hallenius as they sought to make up for the disappointment of missing out on promotion, but their famously vocal fans were to be let down once more after Jönsson got to the ball first after Hopf had failed to hold Erik Sundin's shot.

"It feels damned good to win," Jönsson said. "It doesn't make up for everything that happened last weekend, but it feels good." Helsingborg claimed the very first Swedish Cup in 1941, and this was the fourth success in the competition. Defender Christoffer Andersson, 32, stressed the significance of his side's achievement, saying: "A title is a title. It's something that will remain in the history books."
