Asamoah Gyan's third goal in three days earned Sunderland AFC a 1-1 draw at UEFA Champions League contenders Tottenham Hotspur FC on a night when Stoke City FC defeated Birmingham City FC 3-2.
Gyan, who scored twice in a 2-0 defeat of Stoke on Saturday, swiftly cancelled out Rafael van der Vaart's 64th-minute opener at White Hart Lane, running on to Danny Welbeck's touch in behind and sliding past Heurelho Gomes. The result leaves Tottenham and Sunderland level on 16 points in sixth and seventh place respectively ahead of eight more Premier League games on Wednesday.
Dean Whitehead, meanwhile, bundled in the winner five minutes from time as Stoke ended a run of four successive top-flight defeats. Tony Pulis's side had earlier surrendered a two-goal lead at home to Birmingham, who lie one place above the bottom three after one win in their last ten games.
