Malmö end six-year wait for Swedish title

Malmö FF celebrated their centenary year by claiming the Swedish title for the first time since 2004 as the Sky Blues overcame Mjällby AIF 2-0 on the final day of the season.

Both goals came in the first half with Jiloan Hamad opening the scoring in the 17th minute courtesy of a volley into the bottom corner and Agon Mehmeti finishing off a fine move initiated by Jeffrey Aubynn and Daniel Larsson on the stroke of half-time.

Larsson had a chance to make it 3-0 in the second half only to shoot just wide after sprinting free, but the result and a 16th Swedish championship were not in doubt by that stage. Helsingborgs IF – the only other team with a chance of challenging for the trophy – could only manage a goalless draw against Kalmar FF, leaving them two points adrift of the new champions.

Malmö coach Roland Nilsson said: "It's a wonderful feeling. Earlier in the season we chased down Helsingborg and eventually overtook them. Since then, we've done our job in every do-or-die match that's come our way. We've got many young lads who are just at the beginning of their careers. They will only get better and better."
