Bayer 04 Leverkusen moved up to third in the Bundesliga with a 1-0 defeat of struggling FC Schalke 04 while Theofanis Gekas scored twice as Eintracht Frankfurt stretched their unbeaten league run to five games by winning 3-1 at FC St. Pauli.
With the teams that started the weekend holding the top four positions all in action on Sunday, it was a chance for the chasing pack to the close the gap. SV Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV both slipped up, however, leaving Leverkusen and Frankfurt the biggest winners of the day.
Sidney Sam's 65th-minute goal was enough for Leverkusen, who are now six points behind leaders 1. FSV Mainz 05. Eintracht are two points behind Leverkusen in fourth; they fell behind early at St Pauli but Gekas scored twice, his league-leading eighth and ninth of the season, before Caio sealed victory. Bremen lost 3-2 at home to 1. FC Nürnberg and drop to 11th.
Schalke are now second from bottom after Milivoje Novaković's hat-trick gave 1. FC Köln a 3-2 win against Hamburg that takes them out of the drop zone along with 1. FC Kaiserslautern, who sent VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach to the basement 3-0. VfB Stuttgart, beaten 2-0 by VfL Wolfsburg, are now back in the bottom three.
