Branislav Ivanović scored with six minutes to go to give Chelsea FC victory on an afternoon when Arsenal FC also left it late to win and Manchester City FC lost.
Chelsea began the day five points clear of Arsenal, City and United and they preserved their advantage despite falling behind at Blackburn Rovers FC on 21 minutes to a Benjani Mwaruwari header. Nicolas Anelka levelled late in the half following good work from Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba and their pressure for a winner told thanks to Branislav Ivanović's goal with six minutes left.
Arsenal seemed to have been denied victory against bottom team West Ham United FC by goalkeeper Robert Green but with two minutes to go Alex Song scored to give the Gunners a 1-0 win. United had it slightly more comfortable, beating fellow UEFA Champions League contenders Tottenham Hotspur FC 2-0 thanks to goals from Nemanja Vidić and Nani.
The surprise of the day was provided by 19th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers FC who came from behind to beat City 2-1 with a 57th-minute David Edwards winner. Everton are up to seventh after defeating Stoke City FC 1-0, just ahead of Fulham FC, who beat Wigan Athletic FC 2-0.
