England
Javier Hernández came off the bench to score Manchester United's last-minute winner as they defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers FC 3-2 to advance to the quarter-finals of the English League Cup. The Mexican international had scored both United's goals in their Premier League victory at Stoke City FC on Sunday and he struck again late on with a neat finish after United had twice thrown away the lead.
Bébé opened the scoring with his first goal for United since his €9m summer move from Vitória SC on 55 minutes only for George Elokobi to draw Wolves level four minutes later. After Park Ji-Sung had restored United's advantage with 20 minutes to play Kevin Foley again hit back for Wolves (76) before Hernández's late intervention secured victory for the home side. Of the other Premier League teams in action there were wins for West Bromwich Albion FC, Wigan Athletic FC and Birmingham City FC.

Bastian Schweinsteiger scored twice as Bayern progressed to the third round of the German Cup with a 2-1 win at home to SV Werder Bremen. Claudio Pizarro opened the scoring for Bremen in the second minute, but Schweinsteiger replied for the holders with goals on 27 and 74 minutes. The Bundesliga's bottom side 1. FC Köln won for the first time in six matches 3-0 at home to TSV 1860 München, and there were also victories for VfL Wolfsburg, FC Schalke 04, who beat FSV Frankfurt 1-0, and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. SC Freiburg were the only Bundesliga side to bow out, losing 2-1 at second-tier FC Energie Cottbus.
France
AS Monaco FC held their nerve to advance to the quarter-finals of the French League Cup on penalties after a 1-1 draw with FC Lorient. Following a goalless opening 90 minutes Petter Hansson opened the scoring nine minutes into extra time only for Sigamary Diarra to equalise with two minutes remaining. Monaco would have the last laugh, with Dieumerci Mbokani firing in from the spot to ensure a 5-3 victory on penalties.
Elsewhere Guirane N'Daw got the only goal as AS Saint-Etienne FC, joint second in Ligue 1, beat FC Girondins de Bordeaux 1-0, Vincent Aboubakar scored a hat-trick to lead Valenciennes FC to a 4-0 win against US Boulogne while Montpellier Hérault SC saw off AC Ajaccio 2-0. Olympique Lyonnais host Paris Saint-Germain FC on Wednesday, when Olympique de Marseille travel to EA Guingamp and AJ Auxerre face SM Caen.
Spain
First-half goals from Maxwell (16) and Pedro Rodríguez (25) put Barcelona in command of their round of 32 tie against third-tier AD Cueta while Real Madrid CF were held to a goalless draw away to Real Murcia CF in the Copa del Rey. The second legs take place in two weeks' time. Third division Real Union Club take on holders Sevilla FC on Wednesday.

In the night's only match in the Coppa Italia third round, Elhadji Babacar scored the solitary goal as ACF Fiorentina defeated Empoli FC 1-0 after extra time.
