Liverpool FC's poor start to the Premier League season continued as they were soundly beaten 2-0 by Merseyside rivals Everton FC, on a day when Manchester City FC reclaimed second spot with a 3-2 triumph at Blackpool FC.
Everton were the dominant force from the off at Goodison Park and although Roy Hodgson's men weathered the early storm, they fell behind after 34 minutes when Seamus Coleman's marauding run ended with a cutback that Tim Cahill rifled into the roof of the net.
The advantage was doubled five minutes after half-time courtesy of an equally emphatic strike, Mikel Arteta's swerving drive hitting the target after Liverpool could only clear Leighton Baines's corner to the edge of the area. The Reds conjured little in reply, slipping to one place off the bottom of the table with just one win in their opening eight games.
Manchester City played second fiddle to Blackpool for much of the game at Bloomfield Road, but a second-half double by Carlos Tévez either side of a Marlon Harewood header made the difference, before substitute David Silva wrapped up the points to move Roberto Mancini's charges within two points of leaders Chelsea FC.
