Hamburger SV ended 1. FSV Mainz 05's hopes of becoming the first team to begin a Bundesliga season with eight straight wins after a late 1-0 victory on Saturday.
Mainz equalled FC Bayern München and 1. FC Kaiserslautern's joint mark of seven victories prior to the international break but lost the league lead on goal difference last night after BV Borussia Dortmund won 2-1 at 1. FC Köln. They remain second after José Paolo Guerrero struck with a minute to go for visitors Hamburg.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen lead the chasing pack in third, six points behind the top two, after coming from two down with 18 minutes to go at VfL Wolfsburg to win 3-2, Simon Rolfes scoring twice. Hannover 96, third this morning, lost 3-0 at FC Bayern München to a Mario Gómez hat-trick and are now behind Leverkusen, Hamburg and FC St. Pauli.
St. Pauli overtook Hannover on goal difference with a thrilling 3-2 at home to 1. FC Nürnberg, who twice equalised. SC Freiburg could have been in the top three themselves but lost 2-1 at SV Werder Bremen, back in tenth but only five points behind Leverkusen.
In the big match in the relegation zone, VfB Stuttgart, who replaced coach Christian Gross with Jens Keller this week, twice led at FC Schalke 04 only to draw 2-2 and they remain bottom. There are two games on Sunday.
